Le PhotobookFest

In 2013 Le PhotobookFest was launched by Emilie Hallard and Pablo Porlan. Its mission was to supports the young photobook publishing scene. This was its website for several years.
Content is from the site's 2014 and 2015 archived pages, as well as from other outside sources.

After 3 years devoted to show you new books and dummies, to give a voice to photographers, indie publishers and self-publishers, to share knowledge and experiences, we are no more able to run Le PhotobookFest due to new professional commitments and paths.
We have been very happy to share all these moments with you all and we hope to keep discovering amazing people and works in the future! Much   to all our collaborators, guests and volunteers
RIP Le PhotobookFest and long live the Photobook !

~~~
Life goes on: Although Le PhotobookFest based in France is no longer with us, there happen to be new Photobook oportunities emergiing. Take for instance the 2018 Photobook Dummy Contest promoted by PHOTOBOOKFEST 2018 based out of The Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography in Moscow. This new PHOTOBOOKFEST's mission is to consider photography in the system of modern medias, to determine its possibilities and forms of access to the viewer, including the potential of a photobook as an autonomous art form. Photobook today is a dynamic, evolving format, it changes after the development of technologies, materials, design, typography, and, most importantly, it opens up new ways of interpreting images in a dramatic event. The contest was declared a success with submissions of 118 dummies from 6 countries. Fantastic! However....The contest was open for authors from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldavia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
For those of us who live in the US, ICP in New York City recently had their Spring 2019 Photobook Fest, an evening of shopping and signing where photographers shared their latest book projects. I took the train down from Boston to stay with a friend and attended ICP's Photobook Fest. It was a great evening. I particularly wanted to see Maha Alasaker, a Kuwaiti photographer based in New York City. She is known for her project Women of Kuwait, a project focusing on capturing photos of Kuwaiti women in their bedrooms. Besides Maha Alasaker, Osprey Publishing presented Liesl Bradner’s Snapdragon: The World War II Exploits of Darby's Ranger and Combat Photographer Phil Stern. Other photographers included: Jason Eskenazi,, Stephen Ferry, La Batea (Red Hook Edition, 2017), Fryd Frydendahl, Lucy Helton, Greg Miller, Unto Dust, Andrea Modica, January 1 (L’Artiere, Bologna, Italy), and Sarah Stacke, Photos Day or Night: The Archive of Hugh Mangum. There was really some amazing work.
However, on the way back to my friend's apartment via subway, I was jostled by a harried passenger resulting in my Ray Ban glasses getting knocked off my face and crushed beneath someone's feet. Bummer. Fortunately I had discovered a year ago an online site called Eyeglasses.com, that not only sells a huge selection of Ray Ban frames, but also can fulfill prescription replacement lens. Since I have bought frames with prescription lens installed by them, I was able to go online, and order a new pair of mens fashion glasses with prescription lens since my most recent prescription was already on file. By the time I returned home to Baltimore Maryland, my new glasses were waiting for me.
It was a weird subway experience to say the least. I had grown up in NYC and even attended ICP as a high school intern for three years. I thought I was savvy about traveling by subway and negotiating crowds. My friend said the accident was a fluke and shouldn't color my visit. But it lingers.
The next time I visited my mother at her Bel Air assisted living facility, called Hart Heritage Estates I related the story to her. We were sitting outside bird watching. Hart Heritage Estates has 6.5 acres of park land as part of the facility's grounds making it perfect for getting close to nature. My mother and I take strolls along the pathways whenever the weather is nice. My mother really likes the facility, the staff and the residents. I feel fortunate she was admitted when she applied a couple of years ago. Her comment about my NYC subway experience was a quip that I was lucky not to have ended up on a high jacked subway train. "What!" I replied! Apparently the previous night she had watched the Taking of Pelham One Two Three, a 1974 movie that was released before I was even born! She suggested that I look it up and watch it. I promised I would.
“Winning Rock your dummy! contest in 2013 was a great and exciting experience. My book Did we ever meet? got a lot of exposure and has been since exhibited in Europe and Russia. The PhotobookFest is a 3-day festival that defends the young editorial scene of the photo book, supporting DIY practices in general, and self-publishing and micro-publishing in particular. It is an open and inclusive event, where to share ideas and know-how and expand the horizons of the photo book as we know it to this day. Its first two editions have encouraged young authors to concretize publishing projects and promote their work.
The PhotobookFest will take place at the Belleville Gallery of Artists' Studios and Le Relais Bar, both located within walking distance of one another in the Belleville neighborhood. Belleville is, of course, one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods, but also a neighborhood with an effervescent arts scene thanks to its artists' studios, small galleries and audacious concert halls. An ideal setting for this indie and international event.
Thank who. : a Carte Blanche to Léa Habourdin, David Fathi and Clément Verger.
Léa Habourdin, David Fathi and Clément Verger have decided to look into a page that is never read, rarely seen and that never contains an image. Although it is present, some exceptions not withstanding, in all our books: the acknowledgements page.
Sometimes obscure or funny, absurd list of names or pile of logos of corporate patronage, it conveys, quietly, that an artist is never alone, that a book has a team and a cost, that it sometimes takes years to finance it, that friends helped, that professionals advised. It is customary to thank in a single breath your mom and the latest hyped curators, to say that without Johnny or the Foundation X this book would have never seen the light of day.
They asked themselves, as book readers, what this forgotten but indispensable page could tell them. Is it exclusively intended for those in the “inner circle” or does it illustrate the architecture and conception through those who participated in it? Furthermore, could it be our only clue, our only glance behind the curtain of the book’s making.
Acknowledgements:
We would like to warmly thank Yann Arthus Bertrand, Pablo and Emilie for their awesome financial support, Beyoncé, The International Photobook Corporation, Annakarin, your mom for a great evening, Tuesdays, Roland Barthes for the pizzas, Thibault and his many victims, the police officers who covered-up the case, Elton John, Maya Hoffman, Micheline and Pierre Clement’s parents, Doctors Without Borders, Thierry the organic wine producer, Patrick Cohen, Brigitte and Pierre, the inventor of OSB panels, Albert and Lucienne, and finally your mom again.
And thank to Golden Age, our furnitures sponsor !
